Cool Text Generator: This free site generates logos and text to your specification, with a large variety of fonts and textures.  Results that would take much work in photoshop or the GIMP are rendered in seconds. cooltext.com

 

The GIMP: This open-source alternative to photoshop offers all the same image manipulation tools and functions as photoshop, but with a slightly different format and wording.  Download at gimp.org (scroll down to 'Binaries for various platforms').
