Kara Dehyle served a six month long internship in Chiapas, Mexico.  Here, Kara worked with a grassroots, weaving cooperative run entirely by indigenous female weavers.  She taught computer classes, helped with administrative tasks, worked on a digital product catalog and supported their efforts to bring about sustainable community development within the small, weaving communities.  The two organizations that Kara worked with were Jolom Mayae'tik and Kunal Antzetik.  Both groups are run and administered completely by the women from communities around San Cristobal, Chiapas, though Kunal’s role was more of administering and assisting the development of Jolom’s merchandise and marketing.

During her internship, Kara had many exciting experiences.  She taught computer classes in basic computer navigation and software programs.  She also assisted the women in learning digital photography, email and Internet navigation. Her work on the digital catalog was the most time consuming and she assisted the women in reaching a broader audience for their products through the use of an Internet-based digital catalog.

Due to her hard work and perseverance, Kara was awarded a $10,000 scholarship from the Strauss Foundation to support her project.
