Overcoming obstacles and pursuing her dreams are two of the
life skills Katie Roper says she acquired at UCSC, where several
professors encouraged her to take a hands-on approach to her education.
Roper had always wanted to work in Africa, and with the support of faculty mentors, she arranged two separate internships in Kenya, where she produced documentary films about environmental sustainability.
This was the booming question that guest speaker Alan Richards posed for students at his lecture Tuesday, Dec. 4 titled, “Today’s Youth, and Global Crises in Justice and Nature.”
The seminar was the beginning of the Colloquium Series for the Global Information Internship Program (GIIP), a student-run program that focuses on youth activism involving an array of national and international issues.
The Global Information Internship Program is an innovative "digital service learning" program at UC Santa Cruz. GIIP is creating a new generation of "info activists," committed to advancing social justice, democratizing globalization, and building social entrepreneurship.
